Wegmeyer Farms, also known has Grassymead, has served many uses in the past. A grist mill claims significance as the first recorded activity. The mill was owned and operated by Israel Janney as long ago as 1774.
Besides the grist mill, present day observations support earlier reports that a general merchandising store owned by the Silcott family was located between the mill and the present stone barn.
Records indicate the Quaker farmhouse was built in 1857 and was probably a simple “two down, two up” - a four-room structure of brick nogging with German beaded siding.
In the early 20th century, Grassymead was operated as a dairy farm. It was later turned into a beef operation, then a horse farm before becoming a vegetable farm in its present use.
